The Largest and Smallest Shoe Sizes: Records and Real Life
According to Guinness World Records, the longest foot of any living person measures 40.55 cm, and its owner needs a European size 69. The historical record is bigger still: a foot of about 47 cm and a shoe of roughly EU 75. For most people, though, the question of the largest and smallest shoe size is more practical: where does the shop size range end, and what do you do when your feet fall outside it?
The largest feet in the world
The record among living men belongs to Jeison Orlando Rodríguez Hernández from Venezuela. In 2018, in France, his right foot was measured at 40.55 cm and his left at 40.47 cm. His shoes are made by a shoemaker in Germany, who says he needs a European size 69.
The record among living women is held by Tanya Herbert from the USA: 33.1 cm for the right foot and 32.5 cm for the left, measured in Houston in 2022. She is about 206 cm tall and wears men’s US size 16–17.
The largest feet ever reliably recorded belonged to Robert Wadlow, the tallest man in documented history. His foot was about 47 cm long, and he wore US size 37AA, roughly a European 75.
What those numbers mean in everyday sizes
European sizes are counted from the length of the last in Paris points, two thirds of a centimetre each, and the last is longer than the foot to leave room for the toes. That is why the size number grows faster than the foot length.
For comparison, a foot of about 25 cm usually corresponds to EU 39–40, and one of about 29 cm to EU 45–46. Record feet of more than 40 cm go far beyond size 60.
The exact conversion depends on the maker and the last. Two shoes marked 45 from different brands can differ in length by almost a centimetre, so with an unusual foot it pays to rely on measurements rather than on the number printed inside the shoe.
The smallest adult shoe sizes
Guinness World Records does not keep an equally well-known category for the smallest adult feet. A small foot rarely becomes a medical or practical problem that anyone records.
In practice, the smallest adult sizes are around EU 33–34 for women and EU 36–38 for men. Feet like this occur in people of short stature, with some inherited conditions, after injuries or surgery, and sometimes simply as an individual norm.
The problem of a small foot mirrors that of a large one: adult ranges have almost no styles in the size, and children’s shoes of the right length fit neither in shape nor in appearance.
| Case | Foot length | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Record, living men | 40.55 cm | About EU 69 |
| Record, living women | 33.1 cm | Men’s US 16–17 |
| Historical record | About 47 cm | US 37AA, about EU 75 |
| End of men’s shop range | About 29–30 cm | EU 45–46 |
| Start of women’s shop range | About 22.5–23 cm | EU 35–36 |
| Small adult size | About 21–22 cm | EU 33–34 |
Height and foot size
Foot length is related to height, but loosely. All three record holders above are over two metres tall, and their large feet are part of the overall picture.
In everyday life the link is weaker. There are people 190 cm tall in size 42 and people 170 cm tall in size 45. Height lets you guess roughly, but not predict a size.
A small foot with average height is also common. People with such feet are often surprised that no adult pair fits them, although everything else about their build is ordinary.
Where the shop size range ends
Mass-market women’s ranges usually start at EU 36, less often 35, and end at 40–41. Men’s ranges usually run from 40 to 45–46.
Anything outside those limits is made in small batches or not at all: demand for the extreme sizes is low, and each size needs its own last.
Even when a shop has a women’s 42 or a men’s 47, the choice is one or two styles, often trainers. Classic shoes, a pair for a celebration or winter boots are the hardest to find.
Half sizes and width
Shop ranges go in whole sizes, sometimes halves. One European size is two thirds of a centimetre of last length, and for many feet that step is too coarse.
Width, the girth across the ball of the foot, usually comes in only one fitting per range. At the extremes a foot differs more from the average, and one width is not enough.
So a man in size 46 with a wide foot often buys a 47 and gets extra length, while a woman in size 34 with a narrow heel buys a 35 and adds a heel grip. Both are compromises.
Why a last cannot simply be scaled up or down
Ready-made large and small sizes are usually produced by grading: the average last is stretched or shrunk. The length changes, but the proportions stay those of the middle size.
Feet do not grow that way. A large foot is often relatively narrow at the heel and high at the instep, while a small one may be wider across the ball than the scale suggests. A graded last misses most at the extremes.
That is why people with extreme sizes complain not only about the lack of styles. Even the pair they find often slips at the heel, presses on the instep or creases across the toe.
Two feet, two sizes
Many people’s right and left feet differ. With extreme sizes the difference is felt more, because the whole last is either very long or very short.
Ready-made shoes are identical for both feet. Anyone whose feet differ by a size or more has to buy two pairs or live with one uncomfortable foot.
In bespoke, the lasts are built separately for each foot, and from the outside the pair still looks symmetrical.
How shoes for very large feet are made
For feet beyond EU 50 there are no ready lasts even among shoemakers. The last is built from scratch to measurements: length, girths at the ball, instep and heel, and the height of the toes.
Materials are chosen for the size as well. The vamp of a large pair needs a big piece of leather without flaws, and the sole is cut from a bend long enough for the foot.
The fastening and shaft are planned separately. A high instep is common with large feet, so the lacing or zip is designed to let the pair go on without a shoehorn. Winter boots allow for the thickness of fur and sock, which on a large last makes a bigger difference to volume.
How shoes for very small feet are made
The last is built as an adult one, to measurements, with a narrow, firm heel and volume where the foot needs it. The design is recalculated: straps are made narrower, hardware smaller, and the heel is chosen for a short foot.
For a small women’s foot the heel matters most. On a short foot the same heel tilts it more steeply, so the height is chosen for the foot, not from a catalogue.
Small pairs are often requested in the image of a favourite shop style that is impossible to find in the right size. You bring the sample, the silhouette is reproduced and the last is built for your foot.
Price and lead time for a non-standard size
An unusual size is not a reason for a surcharge. A bespoke last is built from scratch in any case, and the work for a size 34 is the same as for a 46.
A bespoke pair costs from 100,000 ₽. The lasts take about six weeks, a first pair including lasts about ten weeks, and further pairs on the finished lasts from four weeks.
The lasts are kept at the workshop. Once you have your pair, it can be repeated in another colour or season without new measurements.
Living with an unusual size
People with extreme sizes usually know two or three shops by heart where their size sometimes appears, and choosing shoes starts with the question of what exists in their size and only then of what they like.
The typical wardrobe follows: one pair of trainers, one pair of boots for every season, and classic shoes only for special occasions, almost always uncomfortable. A pair for a wedding or graduation can take months to find.
Bespoke removes the question. The style is chosen for taste and occasion, the last for the foot, and the size stops deciding what you wear.
How to find your real size
Stand on a sheet of paper, trace your foot and measure from the heel to the longest toe. Measure both feet, and do it in the evening, when feet are slightly larger than in the morning.
With extreme sizes, length alone says little. Girth at the ball and instep and the width of the heel matter as much, and those are taken at the measuring in the workshop.
If you have spent years buying shoes a size too big just to find anything that fits, the number you are used to may be quite different from your real size.
Visiting the workshop from abroad
Clients come to the workshop in Moscow from other cities and other countries. The workshop is at Shelaputinsky Lane 6/3, near Taganskaya metro, open 10:00–20:00 by appointment only.
A first pair requires a visit for measuring and a fitting. Repeat pairs on finished lasts are made from four weeks and can be planned around your next trip.
