Ordering Bespoke Shoes Remotely: When It Works and When It Does Not
A remote order is not always possible. For a first bespoke pair you need to come to the workshop in Moscow: the shoemaker has to measure your feet and see your gait, your old shoes and how the fit behaves. The exception is a proven last of your own, or a repeat order from measurements the workshop already holds.
When bespoke can be ordered remotely
The short answer: a second pair, yes; a first pair, no. The line is drawn by one question: does a last built to your measurements already exist?
If it does and the fit of the previous pair is confirmed, a visit is not needed for a new style. The style, leather, sole and season can be discussed by message, because the fit is already known.
If there is no last, a remote order means building one from data that is not enough for the purpose. Below is exactly what is missing and why none of the usual suggestions can supply it.
Why a first pair is not made without a visit
The reason is technical and lies in a set of measurements. Fit is decided by girths: across the widest part of the foot, around the heel, over the instep. None of them can be obtained remotely.
An outline traced at home contains the length and a rough width. It has no girths, no instep height, no height of prominent areas and no difference between the foot at rest and under load, although under body weight the arch drops and the forefoot spreads.
As the shoemaker puts it, clients cannot measure themselves: the tracing tool will be tilted, or the heel-to-instep girth and the instep will be taken wrongly. So even the length the outline seems to give is distorted.
The other part cannot be sent in a photo: how the foot behaves in movement, where it rolls, where the skin is already used to pressure. The shoemaker sees this during the examination, and it shapes the decisions in the last.
What can and cannot be done remotely
The table splits the process by stage for a first pair and for a repeat pair on an existing last. The one stage that cannot leave the workshop in any scenario is measuring for a new last.
| Stage | First pair | Repeat pair on an existing last |
|---|---|---|
| Measuring | Only at the workshop | Not needed |
| Examining feet and gait | Only in person | Not needed |
| Reviewing old shoes | In person; photos give part of the picture | Useful, not essential |
| Choosing style, leather, sole | Can be discussed by message in advance | Fully remote |
| Trial shoe fitting | In person, 1–2 times, 3 if needed | Usually one check, sometimes none |
| Adjusting the last | After the fitting | Needed if a year or more has passed |
| Receiving the pair | In person or shipped, agreed separately | Shipped |
How it works for clients from other cities and countries
The pattern is this: one visit to Moscow for measuring, then the last and the trial shoes are made, then a visit for the fitting, then the pair is made and collected or sent. If the fit is confirmed at the first fitting, two visits are enough.
A planning tip: measuring and the first fitting can occasionally be combined into one trip if it is long enough, but more often it takes two. Discuss this early so the dates are set in advance.
After that it gets easier: the last stays at the workshop, and the second, third or fifth pair is made without measuring. That is why for someone from elsewhere bespoke pays off cumulatively: the first pair is worth the trip, the later ones need none.
On timing: between the trial shoes being ready and the fitting, time passes while a visit is arranged, and that is part of the total. If you can come quickly, the pair is ready sooner.
What you can prepare before your visit
The remote part of the work is real and shortens the time on site.
- Describe the task: where ready-made shoes press or slip, what will not fasten, which size you usually buy and whether you have to size up.
- Send photos of your old shoes, outside and inside, including the sole and the heel lining. Some of the wear already shows.
- Name the style and the season. They affect decisions about the last, so they are discussed before measuring, not after.
- Mention orthotics and any doctor’s recommendations. Room for an insert is built into the last in advance; mention it later and there will be no room.
- Say how many hours a day you spend on your feet and on what surfaces. The sole and the heel depend on it.
What cannot be prepared remotely is the measurements themselves. Measurements taken by you or elsewhere are not used as the basis for a last, not out of distrust, but because the last is built by the person who took the measurements, and they already carry an understanding of how they will become the shape of the shoe.
Why a cast sent by post will not do
People ask this often, and it is a reasonable question: a cast seems to capture the shape.
The problem is that a cast fixes the foot in one position, while fit depends on how the foot behaves under load and in movement. Taking a cast is also a technique in itself: the position of the foot, the load on it, the moment it sets. Without that technique you get a shape, but not the one that is needed.
Most importantly, a cast does not replace an examination. It does not show how you walk, where old shoes wear, where the foot rolls or which areas are already irritated by pressure.
So a cast sent by post can supplement the conversation, but it cannot be the input for a last.
What is lost without an examination
The list is specific, and it shows why remote data do not solve the problem.
How the foot behaves under body weight. The arch drops, the forefoot spreads and the girths grow. The difference varies from person to person and shows how mobile the foot is. A photo cannot show it.
Gait: where the foot rolls on landing, how it pushes off, whether you favour a painful area. This is visible only in movement.
The height of prominent areas. A bunion, a deformed toe, a bump on the heel must not touch the shoe, and for that it is not enough to know they are there; you have to know at what height.
The skin: where there are already abrasions, calluses and corns, areas used to pressure. It is a map of where shoes have pressed before.
The difference between the feet. Almost everyone has one, and in a New York study 60% of people with ill-fitting shoes had more than half a size between their own feet. It cannot be measured remotely, and lasts are made for each foot separately.
Common suggestions that do not work
Several things clients suggest, and why each falls short.
“I will be measured by a local shoemaker and send the numbers.” Logical, but girths are taken at specific points with the foot in a specific position, and the last is built by the person who measured: the measurements carry an understanding of how they become a shoe. Someone else’s numbers without that are just numbers.
“I will send shoes that fit me; make the new pair the same.” Useful as a supplement, since the volume and wear show in the pair. But how that shoe was made is unknown, and its inside shape cannot be reconstructed from the outside.
“Use my size and width from another workshop.” Widths differ between makers and workshops just as size charts do. The shoemaker calls mismatched labelling the most common fault in ready-made men’s shoes: the label says one thing and the shoe is smaller.
“Make it with room to spare and we will adjust later.” Extra room cannot be adjusted away. A pair made looser than it should be lets the foot slide inside, which means friction and abrasions where there is no pressure.
The risk of a remote first order
It is worth being honest about what happens if a pair is made from remote data anyway.
First, the fit becomes a lottery. Girths alone decide whether a pair presses or slips, and without them the calculation is approximate. The girth across the widest part of the foot cannot be adjusted with laces: it is right or it is not.
Second, corrections move onto the finished pair. Some decisions, such as ball girth, heel shape and length, cannot be changed on sewn shoes. Trial shoes exist precisely so these can be corrected before the real pair is made.
Third, breaking in does not help. In bespoke it counts as a fitting error, not a stage: the real pair should be comfortable from the start.
Hence the workshop’s position: distance must not ruin the result. If a first pair is made without proper measuring, the saving of one visit is paid for with the fit, and that is a bad trade.
Sending the finished pair
This is a separate question, often confused with ordering remotely. Shipping concerns receiving the pair, not making it, and has fewer limits.
Finished pairs can be shipped, including internationally by courier, and this is normal for repeat orders. Shipping is arranged individually and is not included in the price. For a first pair, though, collecting it in person makes sense: at collection the fit is checked in the finished shoes, not only in the trial pair, and anything that differs is seen and corrected while the pair is still at the workshop.
If you cannot come for the first pair, a reasonable compromise is to agree in advance what happens if something does not match: how the pair returns to the workshop, what can be corrected on finished shoes and what would need a new pair. Discuss it before shipping, not after.
When a remote order works without reservations
A few scenarios need no visit.
A repeat pair in the same style on a proven last, with the fit confirmed; only the leather and details change.
A repeat pair in a different style on the same last. Possible with a caveat: slip-ons such as loafers and court shoes stay on by fit alone and sometimes still need a check.
A change of season: a winter pair on the same last with room for a thick sock, discussed by message with the volume calculated in advance.
And one time limit: if a year or more has passed since the last order, you are measured again. Feet change, and the last is adjusted to new measurements, which again means a visit.
If you cannot come at all
The honest answer: then bespoke is not right for a first pair, and it is better to say so at once than to take an order with a fit that is bound to be approximate.
A working alternative is ready-made shoes with extra width and depth. Many of the problems people bring to bespoke are solved this way: if your foot is within the ready-made girths and simply needs more volume, a ready-made pair in the right width will solve it faster and for less.
If your foot falls outside the ready-made range, with girths that do not match, clearly different left and right feet or prominent areas, then one trip for measuring remains a condition without which the result cannot be assured.
Frequently asked questions
- Can bespoke shoes be ordered remotely?
- A repeat pair on your existing last, yes, fully remotely. A first pair, no: the fit depends on girths that cannot be taken from a photo or by measuring yourself.
- Why can’t I measure myself and send the numbers?
- An outline gives the length and a rough width but no girths, no instep height and no difference between the foot at rest and under load. Tracing your own foot also tilts the pencil and distorts even the length.
- What about a cast sent by post?
- A cast fixes the foot in one position, while fit depends on how it behaves under load and in movement. It also does not replace an examination of your gait and old shoes.
- How many trips does a client from abroad need?
- Usually two: measuring and a fitting. If the fit is confirmed at once, that is all. The last then stays at the workshop, and later pairs need no measuring.
- What can be discussed before the visit?
- The task, style, season, leather and sole, any orthotics and doctor’s recommendations, and how many hours a day you spend on your feet.
- Can the finished pair be shipped abroad?
- Yes, by courier, including internationally; shipping is arranged separately and not included in the price. For a first pair, collecting it in person is better so the fit can be checked.
- What if I cannot come at all?
- Then bespoke does not suit a first pair. Ready-made shoes with extra width and depth are a working alternative if your foot is within the ready-made girths.
