A Bespoke Shoe Gift Certificate: A Gift for Someone Who Has Everything

It is hard to give an object to someone who has everything: they would buy it themselves and choose better than you. But some things cannot be bought ready-made, and a pair of shoes built on a last for their own feet is one of them. A gift certificate from Sergey Grechushkin’s workshop in Moscow gives exactly that: a fitting, a choice of style and leather with the master, a trial fitting and a pair nobody else owns.

What you are really giving

An expensive watch, pen or knife is something a wealthy person usually already has, and often more than one. One more says something about the giver’s budget but little about their attention to the person.

A certificate for a bespoke pair gives an experience people rarely arrange for themselves: several meetings with the master, a conversation about how and where they walk, choosing leather from swatches, a fitting on a trial shoe. At the end comes a pair made for one particular pair of feet.

In 2016 the researchers Cindy Chan and Cassie Mogilner compared material gifts with experiential ones. Experiential gifts did more to strengthen the relationship between giver and recipient, because they evoked more emotion when they were used. A bespoke pair combines both: first the experience, then an object worn for years.

Two kinds of certificate

A certificate for a bespoke pair. Its value starts at 100,000 ₽, the price of a pair made to order. The recipient comes for measuring, chooses the style, leather and colour, and the workshop makes the whole pair against the certificate.

A certificate for any amount. You choose the value. It can cover part of a pair with the difference paid on top, a repair or service for expensive shoes, or a repeat pair on an existing last.

Both certificates are valid for six months from the date of purchase.

How to give it

The e-certificate arrives immediately after payment. It can be forwarded by messenger or email, or printed and slipped into a card.

The gift-boxed certificate is made and delivered within 14 days. This is the option for handing over in person: at an anniversary, a birthday or a meeting with a partner.

If the date is close, choose the e-certificate: it will be ready for any celebration, even if you remembered the evening before.

A gift for a man

A status gift for a man is one that shows someone thought about him. A bespoke pair says so at once: it was not picked off a shelf, it was built for him.

For a man who wears suits, a bespoke pair solves what no shop can: a precise fit on his own foot. Expensive ready-made shoes are built for an average foot; a bespoke pair is built for his.

If the recipient has an unusual foot, a large or small size, a wide foot or a high instep, the certificate solves a problem he may have been unable to solve in shops for years.

A gift for a director or business partner

A gift for a director or a business partner should convey respect without looking like an attempt to buy favour. A bespoke shoe certificate works well here: it is a sign of attention to the person, and only the giver knows the amount and details.

A status gift for a director’s anniversary, a luxury business gift from a team, a birthday present for a manager: in each case the certificate removes the risk of getting the size, colour or taste wrong. The recipient chooses all of that with the master.

A certificate can be issued from a company or a group of people. The giver’s name is included as you wish.

A gift for a woman

It is hard to give shoes to a woman who owns dozens of pairs: you know neither her size nor what does not pinch. A certificate removes the question.

A bespoke pair can be made to resemble her favourite one: she brings a sample, the silhouette is repeated, and the last is built for her feet. Pumps that do not press by evening, boots made exactly to her calf, shoes for a wedding or a celebration: the brief is hers to set.

If she has a bunion or small feet, the certificate becomes a gift that changes everyday comfort. It does not add to the wardrobe; it changes the way she walks.

A luxury gift without a logo

Luxury gifts are usually recognised by their brand. A bespoke certificate works differently: the finished pair carries no one else’s logo, and its value shows in the fit, the leather and the work.

Someone who knows things notices. They know a pair built on a last for their feet cannot be bought in a boutique and represents weeks of work by one craftsman.

For the recipient it is a gift worn every day. Each time they put the shoes on, they remember who gave them.

What happens at the meetings with the master

The first meeting is measuring and conversation. The master asks where and how much the person walks, what pinches in their current shoes and which styles they like. Both feet are measured, and the gait and the wear on old shoes are examined.

Then comes the choice of style and materials. The recipient holds leather swatches, looks at colours and discusses the toe, welt and sole. For many this is the most enjoyable part: their taste becomes the future pair.

The fitting on a trial shoe is the moment someone first feels how a shoe built on their own last sits. People remember it for a long time.

Collecting the finished pair completes the gift. It is handed over in the workshop by the master himself.

Corporate gifts

Companies give certificates to directors, partners and key staff for anniversaries, year-end results and completed projects. A certificate for a set amount is convenient when the gift budget is fixed.

Several certificates can be issued in one purchase. The recipients book their own measuring appointments at a time that suits them.

Restraint matters in a business gift. The gift-boxed certificate looks formal and does not draw attention to the amount.

For a connoisseur who already owns handmade shoes

If the recipient already owns expensive shoes, a certificate for any amount can go towards their repair or a scheduled service: a resole that keeps the welt, colour restoration, new top pieces.

Many brands have left Russia, and few craftsmen take on shoes of complex construction. Such a certificate gives peace of mind about the shoes the person already has.

A status gift for an anniversary

For a fiftieth, sixtieth or seventieth birthday people give things that should last and say something about the person’s place in the giver’s life. A handmade welted pair, well looked after, is worn for years and can be resoled several times.

Anniversary gifts are often collected from a family or colleagues. A bespoke pair certificate works here too: the amount is gathered together, and the recipient chooses the pair.

If the person has worn the same favourite style for years, the pair can be recreated from a sample but on their own last. For many this is the most touching gift: a familiar thing that finally fits perfectly.

If the recipient does not know what to choose

Many people have never ordered shoes and do not know where to start. That is normal: nothing needs to be decided in advance, everything is settled at the first meeting.

The master will explain which styles suit their lifestyle and wardrobe, show pairs and leather swatches and suggest where to begin. Usually the first pair is the one worn most often: classic shoes, derbies or boots.

The certificate does not tie the recipient to a style. They can choose shoes for a suit, winter boots or knee-high boots.

How the recipient uses the certificate

The recipient writes on Telegram or calls the workshop to book a measuring appointment. The workshop is on Shelaputinsky Lane in Moscow, near Taganskaya metro, open 10:00–20:00 strictly by appointment.

Making the lasts takes about six weeks, followed by a fitting on a trial shoe, and then the final pair is made. The first pair with its lasts takes about ten weeks.

The lasts stay at the workshop. Later pairs on them are made from four weeks, without new measuring.

Why this workshop

Sergey Grechushkin is a craftsman with a background in pattern cutting. He builds the lasts from measurements of each foot and does the pattern cutting himself, so the fit does not depend on ready-made templates.

People come to him after other workshops have failed to solve their fit problems. For a gift this matters: the recipient must be happy with the pair, or the gift turns into a disappointment.

Every pair is checked on a trial shoe before it is made. If something presses or slips, it is corrected on the last before the final pair is made.

How not to miss the date

The certificate is handed over on the day of the celebration, and the pair is ordered afterwards. So the making time does not hold the gift up: the e-certificate arrives at once, the gift-boxed one within 14 days.

If the pair is needed for a particular event, such as a wedding or a formal reception, count back from the event. The first pair with lasts takes about ten weeks, a repeat pair from four. A certificate for a wedding is best given at least three months ahead.

Six months of validity is enough time to book the measuring and choose the style without hurry.
